An often over-looked optimization practice is image optimization. Everyone knows that people like to see images on your site as they often help tell your story. But, simply using images for your users is not enough, you need to optimize them to help the search engines understand the theme of your page.
When optimizing images, be sure and change the name of the image to something descriptive to the content found on the page it will appear.
Example:
If you're posting product photos for "blue widgets", don't use file names such as, image1.jpg. Take a few extra minutes and change the product photo to something like 2x5-blue-widgets.jpg.
Not only will this technique provide the search engines keyword relevant content, it will help them to understand that everything on that page is relevant to "blue widgets".
